ABSTRACT
In January 2002, Flemish registration fees for acquiring real estate have been reduced. In this paper, we analyse the impact of this reduction on the demand side of the Flemish hous- ing market. This is done by means of a microeconomic model explaining the optimal timing of homeownership in the lifecycle. The results indicate that households will become home- owner earlier in the lifecycle. Moreover, some households, which would have been lifelong tenants, will purchase an own house after the reform. Increasing real estate prices or interest rates on mortgages may thwart these effects.
